digitalrorouni, I have no problems with a big file size as long as there is a good reason for it. you might wanna check out Eclipse’s version of R2, they have a great quality and 350 mb episodes, so from what you are saying i expect the quality from thora to be almost as twice as good.

well, i would guess that the large file is is due to :

a. the raw (being that the source is a bluray, not a dvd)

b. probably using FLAC

c. the file is a 720p file

generally speaking, if you get something from thora, expect it to have a high file size, but enough to be able to archive the files as data-files onto a dvd (be it a standard size or a dual layer one).

silentvoice84 Dont get me wrong, its not that im saying the file is so big for no good reason, im sure you have your reasons for it. 90% of the time i archive Thora’s version, thing is if its really so big cause its FLAC like suiton said, its a complete waste for me as i cant tell the difference either way, not that i think its FLAC cause its not listed [either that or AC3 2.0 320 kbps can actually mean FLAC].
at the end of the day i still appreciate all your hard work and would love to see more releases from you guys.

i dont consider it a waste or anything, and the file sizes aren’t that big. it’ll get costly buying those dvd+r discs and whatnot, but the thing is, if you’re not gonna go and buy the legit bluray or dvd discs, then i wouldn’t complain…

You guys are totally missing the point of why I’m asking this.
I’m only asking this because i don’t much space on my HDD but R2 is a series i really enjoy, so if the file size is big because of say stuff like image quality and maintaining high fps during action scenes or something, I’ll archive it anyway, but if its something like FLAC which makes no difference to me at all, I’ll stay with a smaller size release till i can get a new HDD, I never said the file being so big is a waste, just wanted to know the reason for it, that’s all.

If you want to know about quality of Thora works. Let me show you a hint,download Ef-Tales of Melodies of both Thora and Chihiro sub. Compare them and you will see the difference. Just look to the color of cloud on the sky or the ocean in the the midnight.

Seriously, does anyone actually read what I’m writing?
I have quite a few of Thora’s releases on my HDD and i know how good their quality is, but the releases i have don’t have such a big file size as R2 episodes, the episodes i have are between 350-400 MB, i only wanna know why R2 episodes need 500-600 MB while other releases from Thora use 350 MB.

@KitaneNa: Each episode/show is different. Some episodes have absolutely nothing going on, and hence require less data. Some shows have long and detailed action scenes, so it would naturally be larger to keep the store the detail in each frame.

That’s why you see stuffed-up frames in encodes that have capped the bitrate below that which the frames require to look decent.

As for your previous comment that 600MB releases should look twice as good as 350MB episodes…that’s correct in a sense.

If all parameters (resolution, framerate etc) are kept the same, with the sole variable being the file size, then you can expect each frame to have twice the bits, aka data, aka quality.

So yes, it would have twice the theoretical quality. But what we see is “perceivable quality”.

The relationship isn’t linear. The larger your file size, the less perceivable is the quality/MB. Where you like to strike the balance between quality and convenience (of archiving) is up to personal taste.

What I mean is, that the torrent that I donwloaded, have 2 version’s of every picture drama, one in 720p and one in 1080p. I only want to know why that is, I’m not complaining

I think that the CGR2 BDs are, at least partially, in 1080i which would mean that a 1080p encode is out of the question. However, I guess it doesn’t really matter when it comes to the PDs as they are basically slideshows. Note that I’m only speculating, I don’t know a lot about these things. I remember reading something about the CGR2 BDs mixing 1080p scenes with 1080i scenes. Perhaps the PDs on the BDs are actually in 1080p?

And to those who are asking about the source for the subtitles – they’re not from any fansub group, they’re from the Region 1 DVDs. I noticed that the Picture Drama “Turn 0.923″ was using schneizelXkannonOTP’s (gg’s) subtitles though, but since they only subbed 2 out of 9 PDs I guess the rest will be done using the R1 subs as well.

I don’t why people keep asking and complaining for 1080p when they usually don’t have the hardware to even discern the difference between 720p and 1080p. You need a screen larger than 37″ to really see the quality jump in 1080p. Otherwise, they both look almost exactly the same on a smaller monitor. I’m using a 26″ 1080p HD monitor and I can barely tell the difference. Lines are slightly more refined… for double the file size.

Any video lag or de-syncing is a problem on your end. It means your processor isn’t fast enough. You might want to try switching your h.264 decoder from fddshow to coreavc if you haven’t already.

haha Well, since I can understand Japanese to a point, I can tell gg’s translations are sometimes very askew, to the point where I’m in outrage. Eclipse is very accurate on the other hand and translates word for word, literally. Not sure about honorifics, but very accurate.

@fenixdown110: Were the first season’s subs revised (hence gg-THORA)? gg’s subs might not be the best but I think I’d prefer it over official (localized) subs. I don’t know Japanese but it’s obvious that Eclipse = quality subs.

I believe so. I realize localized subs aren’t great either. However gg’s subs are temperamental. Sometimes the translations are accurate and other times they are horribly mistranslated. Meanings and phrases are sometimes seemingly guessed. But I think overall gg subs should be better than the localized version. I think Thora might have realized that too so they combined the localized with gg’s, taking the best from both. Hence gg-Thora like you said. I always watch gg releases as speed subs and use other reputable groups as archives. And almost all the time, gg’s translations will differ from the other group’s. I’m guessing their translator isn’t exactly fluent in Japanese.

No one knows when THORA will release the next episodes other than THORA.

They don’t have to give any progress reports let alone releases. These are 100% free stuff we’re getting.

Unless you want to either provide them with the ISO or purchase the actual BluRay and mail it to them, I would continue to wait. Or you could try checking their IRC channel.

Not necessarily. I was on the IRC channel earlier and unless I am mistaken, he wasn’t there.

Here is what I’ve been thinking.

a. They’re trolling. They’ve had lots of episodes already finished but didn’t release it and stayed quiet on the site and in their IRC channel to see how crazy it’d drive people insane.

b. They had the episodes nearly completed but life happened and they couldn’t get to finishing it. adenozin disappeared or stayed hidden in the background working on episodes.

Whatever the case may be, it would seem that THORA is (finally) releasing some episodes. Maybe we’ll get an explanation as to what (really) happened (or at least more details) later on.

Until then, let’s hope that THORA keeps on releasing more and more episodes.

From what they said in the IRC at the time, the files get added to the bot automatically when they are uploaded to the ftp server. So apparently someone secretly uploaded these releases to the ftp server without telling anyone else that they were doing it.

Just google mIRC and download the client. Install it and run the program. You need to set the server that you’re going to connect to to “Rizon” since that is the network where all fansub groups have their official channels, except for DB who are for some reason hiding on their own server. Go “Tools” –> “Options”. Under “connect” you need to enter the necessary stuff, like your nickname for instance. Then move on to the “servers” section (expand the “connect” options and select “servers”) and pick “Rizon”. Move back to the “connect” options and click the connect button.

Once you’ve connected to Rizon, enter the following in the chat window; “/j #thoranime” and hit enter. You’re now in THORA’s channel. Now, at the top of this page you’ll see a section named “IRC”. Go there, search for your file, click on it, copy the information in the window that pops up and paste it into the IRC client and hit enter to send a request to one of the bots.

It should look like this: “/msg [bot name] XDCC SEND #[number]“. Just copy and paste that information and hit enter. The bot will send you the file and all you have to do is to specify where you want the file to be saved. It’s really simple.

I just checked EP14 with MediaInfo, the encodes are completely new. EP14 has been encoded on 9th of March but just like the previous EPs (and many of Thora’s other releases), the x264 encoding options have been hidden. I think it’s safe to say adenozin is encoding these new EPs. I just wished I could understand why he hides the encoding options…
Still, had you guys prepared the subs beforehand or adenozin also took care of the subs himself previously?

Nice, Turn 19 is up now as well which means that Turn 14-19 have been uploaded by the ghost. These are the episodes that would have become the third batch, the only things “missing” are the PDs from in between Turn 08 and Turn 19. This is awesome, a few days ago I really didn’t think that these episodes would ever find their way to my harddrive.

What makes you think that THORA is using a fansubbing group’s release for Geass R2? He makes no credit/note of it at the top.

Hence, he’s using the official BlURay discs for the script.

I know all that, I have four different releases of R2 archived and I own the DVDs.

If you go back and reread my post you’ll see that I’m talking about the Picture Dramas, not the episodes. The PDs were not included in the american release which means that there’s no official translation for those, and no group finished them either.

Hey, is anyone getting a problem with episodes 8-13? I’m currently using the latest K-Lite Codec pack. Everything else I ever watch including other Thora releases always work fine; but for some reason when I watch episode 8-13 it doesn’t work. The only problem with the episodes are the OP and ED. when the episode gets the the OP or ED, it gets super pixilated beyond recognition, lags, then freezes, then crashes (the sound is unaffected by the lag/freezing). the main body of the episode has no error what so ever, just the OP, and ED (if i just skip those parts, it runs fine)

I’m waiting for the torrent of the last five episodes.
I know the series was it finished a long time, but I want to see the released of Thora and to me IRC speed sucks, cause my connection is a failure when about IRC transferences.

I don’t really care about the Pictures Dramas, but of course I watched that are in the torrents here.

I know there’s other fansub that already have done, English’s and Brazilians, however the Brazilians who sub this anime just sucks and I want Thora cause I like the best.

I don’t care if I have to wait, cause I will anyway.

All of the episodes are available on THORA’s IRC channel. I’m pretty sure that consolidating the final episodes into a torrent has been put on the furthest backburner they have, right up there with Tenchi Muyo Ryo-ohki.

It’s really easy to use IRC. There are some great guides online, and I’m pretty sure there’s even one through the THORA site.
